I was in a clean swing position with momentum behind me. CPI was about to print at 8:30 AM. I forgot. The market didn't.
The setup.
Funded $50K account. I'd been holding a short NQ position from a 4H supply zone since 7:15 AM. Down 8 points, holding for a daily target 40 points lower.
The stop was 18 points above entry. Risk was $360 per contract. I was in 2 contracts. Manageable trade in normal conditions.
The problem: I didn't check the economic calendar that morning. CPI was at 8:30. I had no idea.
What happened.
$50K funded account closed
The "stop loss" was meaningless. In a news spike, your stop becomes a market order that fills wherever liquidity exists. Slippage was 12+ points. The account died in 4 seconds.
What I changed.
Now the economic calendar is the FIRST thing I check every morning — before charts, before levels, before anything. If there's a major release in the session, I have a rule:
- CPI, PPI, PCE, NFP, FOMC — fully flat 5 minutes before the release
- If holding a swing position overnight — check tomorrow's calendar before going to bed
- If a release is within 1 hour — no new positions until it's printed and the dust settles
- 15-30 minutes after a major release — sit out, watch only, no trades
The risk isn't the news itself. The risk is your stop becoming irrelevant. In a 15-point candle, your "stop at -15" fills at -30 or worse. Slippage kills accounts that "had a stop."
WHEN THE MARKET IS
ACTUALLY TRADING.
Your stop is useless during a news spike.
Market liquidity disappears for a few seconds around major releases. Your protective stop becomes a market order that fills at whatever price exists when it triggers — sometimes 10-30 points worse than where you placed it. Be flat before the print. Always.
