NQ is the most popular futures contract for new traders right now. Fast, liquid, and tied to the most-watched tech stocks in the world. But before you start clicking buy/sell, you need to actually understand what you're trading.
What NQ is.
NQ = E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures. It tracks the Nasdaq-100 index — the 100 biggest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq exchange. That means Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, Google, Tesla, and the rest of mega-cap tech.
One NQ contract is a leveraged bet on where that basket of stocks is going. You don't own the stocks. You're trading the price of the future-dated contract.
The math.
That's per contract. So if NQ moves from 20,000 to 20,010, that's 10 points = $200 per contract. Sounds like a lot until you realize NQ can move 50-100 points in 20 minutes during the morning session.
Most retail traders trade 1-3 contracts. Prop firm traders sometimes size up to 5-10 on a $50K account, depending on the firm's rules.
The 3 sessions.
NQ trades almost 24 hours, but only specific windows matter:
6:00 PM – 2:00 AM ET
Quiet, low volume. Usually rangebound. Good for setting overnight inventory, bad for actual trading. Most pros skip it.
3:00 AM – 9:00 AM ET
Starts to wake up. London traders move some volume. The London open at 3 AM ET and the overlap with NY pre-market create some setups.
9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET
This is where the real money is. The first hour (9:30-10:30 AM) and the last hour (3-4 PM) are the most volatile and most profitable for most traders.
What moves NQ.
NQ is sensitive to a few things specifically:
- Mega-cap tech earnings — AAPL, MSFT, NVDA, GOOG, META. When one of these prints big, NQ moves.
- Fed announcements — Rate decisions, FOMC minutes, Powell speeches. Major volatility.
- Inflation data — CPI, PPI, PCE. Tech is rate-sensitive so inflation prints move NQ hard.
- Employment data — NFP (first Friday of every month), JOLTS, jobless claims.
- Geopolitics — Wars, elections, major policy shifts.
The economic calendar is your friend. Know what's printing each day before you sit down to trade.
Common beginner mistakes.
// MISTAKE 01 — TRADING THROUGH NEWS
If a major data release is hitting in 5 minutes, get flat. NQ can move 100+ points in seconds and tear through any stop you have set.
// MISTAKE 02 — OVER-SIZING ON A "PERFECT SETUP"
The "best" setups don't exist. Every trade is a probability. Size like every trade could lose, because plenty of them will.
// MISTAKE 03 — NOT KNOWING WHICH SESSION YOU'RE IN
Same setup at 10 AM ET vs 2 AM ET behaves completely differently. Always know which session governs your current move.
Where to start today.
Open a chart of NQ. Mark the previous day's high, low, and close. Mark the overnight high and low. Mark the 9:30 AM ET open. That's your daily roadmap. Most of the day's action revolves around those 5 levels.
Don't trade for the first 15 minutes after the NY open. Watch how price reacts to those levels. Then look for entries.
